The town healer of Zací was a wise and powerful woman — some called her a witch — who lived above the vault of the cenote, in the heart of the city. She was under the protection of the Cocom family and was the grandmother of Sac-Nicté, whom she raised as an orphan.
After the death of the two lovers, she came to the edge of the cenote, threw a white flower into the water, and said that her promise was fulfilled. Then she put her curse on the cenote: every year, when its green waters turned dark, it would take one life as a sacrifice for that great forbidden love.
