Hul-Kin was the son of the cacique Halach-Huinic, of the Cupul family. His name means “ray of sun” in Maya. He fell in love with Sac-Nicté and met her in secret, because their families were rivals.

When his father discovered the romance, Hul-Kin was sent to the south to marry the princess of another territory and seal a political alliance. The night before the wedding he felt a sharp pain in his chest, like a premonition, and returned to Zací — where he found that Sac-Nicté had died in the cenote. In despair, he threw himself into the water to die beside his true love.
