Maya cities
Maya civilization left great cities in southeastern Mexico and Central America. Chichén Itzá, in Yucatán, is the most famous: its main pyramid, El Castillo, is also known as the Temple of Kukulkán, the feathered serpent of the Maya. Calakmul, in the Campeche jungle, was one of the great Maya powers of the Classic period, and Toniná, in Chiapas, has one of the tallest pyramids in Mesoamerica. Palenque, also in Chiapas, is another of the best-known Maya sites.
Not every famous Maya city is in Mexico: Tikal, one of the most powerful, is in the Petén of Guatemala and is a World Heritage Site of that country, not of Mexico.
