Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan, whose Nahuatl name means “city of the gods” or “place where the gods were made”, lies in the State of Mexico, northeast of Mexico City. During the Classic period it was the largest and most powerful city in Mesoamerica. It is crossed by the Avenue of the Dead, its main avenue, along which stand the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its economy made use of the maguey, which gave pulque, textile fibers and rope, and its trade networks carried thin orange ware, one of the finest crafts of ancient Mexico, all over Mesoamerica. Its influence reached distant Maya cities such as Tikal, in Guatemala, where traces of Teotihuacan have been found.
