UNESCO World Heritage in Mexico

Mexico has more sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List than any other country in the Americas: 36 sites, of which 28 are cultural, 6 natural and 2 mixed. They include archaeological zones such as Teotihuacan, Chichén Itzá, Monte Albán, Palenque and El Tajín; historic centers such as those of Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and Morelia; and natural areas such as Sian Ka’an and the islands of the Gulf of California.

Beyond the sites, UNESCO recognizes Mexico’s intangible cultural heritage, such as the Day of the Dead, traditional Mexican cuisine and mariachi.
