October 17, 1953 - Women's Suffrage
On October 17, 1953, during the presidency of Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, the constitutional reform was published that gave Mexican women full citizenship and the right to vote and stand for office in federal elections.
Women first voted in a federal election on July 3, 1955, when deputies to the Congress of the Union were elected. Keep the two dates apart: 1953 is the year the right to vote was approved, and 1955 the year it was first exercised at the federal level.
The achievement followed decades of struggle by activists such as Hermila Galindo and Elvia Carrillo Puerto.
