El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar

El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar is a biosphere reserve in northwestern Sonora, near the United States border. It combines a striking volcanic field of craters and lava flows with one of the largest fields of active dunes in North America.

Its landscapes have been compared to the moon, and UNESCO inscribed the reserve as a World Heritage Site in 2013. Don’t confuse it with reserves in other states, such as El Vizcaíno in Baja California Sur or Sian Ka’an in Quintana Roo.
