The Fonda

A fonda is a small, usually family-run restaurant serving home-style Mexican food at low prices. Many offer the “comida corrida”: a fixed-price menu of soup, rice, a main dish and agua fresca.

Fondas are found in markets and neighbourhoods all over Mexico and are part of everyday life. Don’t confuse a fonda with a cantina, which is mainly a bar.
