New Mexican Cinema and the "three amigos"

After decades of crisis in the film industry, the so-called New Mexican Cinema emerged in the 1990s, a generation that restored international prestige to Mexican film with movies such as Sólo con tu pareja (1991) and Like Water for Chocolate (1992). It should not be confused with the Golden Age of the 1930s to 1950s.

That wave produced the “three amigos”. Alfonso Cuarón won two Oscars for best director, for Gravity and Roma. Alejandro González Iñárritu also won two, for Birdman and The Revenant. Guillermo del Toro won the 2018 Golden Globe for best director for The Shape of Water, which also earned him the Oscar for best director.
