José María Velasco

José María Velasco (1840–1912) is considered Mexico’s greatest landscape painter. He is famous above all for his monumental views of the Valley of Mexico, painted in the 19th century with remarkable scientific precision.

He taught at the Academy of San Carlos, where the young Diego Rivera was among his students. He worked before the muralists and in a very different style.
