Venustiano Carranza

Venustiano Carranza was a revolutionary leader and constitutionalist who opposed the dictatorship of Victoriano Huerta. He became one of the central political figures of the Revolution after Madero’s death.

Carranza is especially important because he helped guide the process that produced the Constitution of 1917. For citizenship learners, he connects the revolutionary struggle to Mexico’s modern constitutional order and the legal framework that still matters today.

The Plan of Guadalupe, signed on March 26, 1913, disavowed the government of Victoriano Huerta for his betrayal of Francisco I. Madero. Venustiano Carranza proclaimed the Plan de Guadalupe to overthrow Victoriano Huerta and restore constitutional order.
