Bernardo de Balbuena and Grandeza mexicana

Bernardo de Balbuena (c. 1562–1627) was a Spanish-born poet who grew up in New Spain and later became a bishop in the Caribbean.

His long poem Grandeza mexicana (Mexican Grandeur), published in 1604, praises Mexico City —its streets, trade, gardens and people— and is a founding work of New Spain’s literature.
