September 4, 1969 - Mexico City Metro Opens
On September 4, 1969, Line 1 of the Mexico City Metro, the pink line, opened, originally running from Zaragoza to Chapultepec. President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz inaugurated it near the end of his term.
Don’t confuse the date with 1968, the year Mexico City hosted the Olympic Games: the Metro opened the following year. Today it is one of the largest transit systems in the Americas, carrying millions of passengers a day.
