Toltecs and Tula

The Toltecs dominated central Mexico in the Early Postclassic, roughly AD 900 to 1150, from their capital, Tula (Tollan), in today’s state of Hidalgo. “Tula” comes from the Nahuatl Tollan, “place of reeds”, and “Toltec” means “inhabitant of Tula”.

Tula is famous for the Atlanteans, great stone columns shaped as warriors. The Mexica admired the Toltecs as masters of the arts and learning, and called any skilled craftsman a “toltec”.
