Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada

Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada was president of Mexico from 1872 to 1876. As president of the Supreme Court, he took over the presidency when Benito Juárez died in 1872.

He raised the Reform Laws to constitutional rank and gave Paseo de la Reforma its current name. His bid for re-election provoked Porfirio Díaz’s Plan de Tuxtepec, which overthrew him in 1876.
