December 2, 1867 - Organic Law of Public Instruction

The 1867 Organic Law of Public Instruction, issued under Benito Juárez after the Restoration of the Republic, regulated public education in the Federal District and made elementary education free and compulsory.

The law created the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (National Preparatory School), whose founding was promoted and led by the physician and positivist philosopher Gabino Barreda.
