Valladolid Conspiracy

In 1809, a group of criollos in Valladolid (today Morelia, Michoacán), among them José Mariano Michelena, planned to set up a congress to govern New Spain in the name of King Ferdinand VII, who had been deposed by the Napoleonic invasion of Spain. The project is also known as the Plan of Valladolid.

The conspiracy was discovered before it could act, but it was a direct forerunner of the Querétaro conspiracy and of the start of the War of Independence in 1810.
