What religious performance takes place in Iztapalapa?

Every Holy Week, the borough of Iztapalapa in Mexico City stages a massive reenactment of the Passion of Christ, following the Way of the Cross (viacrucis) up the Cerro de la Estrella. Thousands of local residents take part as actors and penitents, and the event draws crowds in the millions.

The tradition began in 1843, when residents organized it in gratitude after surviving a cholera epidemic, and it has been held every year since.
