Pasión de Cristo en Iztapalapa

Iztapalapa, in the east of Mexico City, stages one of the world’s largest Passion plays every Holy Week: thousands of volunteer residents act out the trial, crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ around the Cerro de la Estrella. The tradition began in 1843 as an act of thanksgiving after a cholera epidemic, and today it draws millions of spectators.

Mexico City’s former delegaciones are now called alcaldías (boroughs), so you may see Iztapalapa referred to by either term.
