Mexico’s three official national symbols, the flag, the coat of arms, and the national anthem, are protected by law. The tricolor flag (green, white, and red) carries the coat of arms at its center: an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, an image from the Mexica legend of the founding of Tenochtitlán.

The national anthem, with lyrics by Francisco González Bocanegra and music by Jaime Nunó, was first performed in 1854. Flag Day is celebrated every February 24.
