Bandera de México

In the most widespread modern interpretation, green stands for hope, white for unity, and red for the blood of the heroes who fought for the nation. This is the meaning usually taught in schools and cited in civic ceremonies.

The colors date from the Army of the Three Guarantees of 1821, when they originally symbolized independence (green), religion (white), and the union of Mexicans and Spaniards (red). The secular reinterpretation came later, in the era of Benito Juárez.
