Xochicalco

Xochicalco is a fortified hilltop city in the state of Morelos, near Cuernavaca, that flourished after the fall of Teotihuacan, roughly between 650 and 900 CE. Its most famous monument is the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, covered in finely carved reliefs, and the site also preserves ball courts and an underground astronomical observatory.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Don’t confuse Xochicalco with Xochimilco, the canal district of trajineras in Mexico City — the names sound similar but they are entirely different places.
