Who was Chalchiuhtlicue?

Chalchiuhtlicue, whose Nahuatl name means “she of the jade skirt”, was the Mexica (Aztec) goddess of the waters of the earth: lakes, rivers, springs and seas. She was considered the wife of Tláloc, the rain god, and was usually represented as a woman.

Do not mix the two up: Tláloc sends the rain from the sky, while Chalchiuhtlicue rules the waters that flow on the earth.
