When was Tenochtitlán founded?
Tenochtitlán was the island capital of the Mexica (Aztec) people, founded on Lake Texcoco in 1325 according to tradition. Legend says the Mexica settled where they saw an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, the image at the center of Mexico’s flag today.
Do not confuse the founding date, 1325, with 1521, the year the city fell to Hernán Cortés. Mexico City was built on its ruins.
