What is the feathered serpent called?

Quetzalcóatl means “feathered serpent” in Nahuatl (quetzal, a bird with brilliant plumage, plus cóatl, serpent). He was one of the principal deities of Mesoamerica, associated with wind, wisdom, and life, and worshiped in cultures from Teotihuacán to the Toltecs and the Mexica (Aztecs).

The Maya worshiped an equivalent feathered-serpent god under the name Kukulcán, to whom the main pyramid at Chichén Itzá is dedicated. Do not confuse Quetzalcóatl with Tláloc (the rain god) or Huitzilopochtli (the war god).
