What does Tula mean in Nahuatl?

Tula comes from the Nahuatl Tollan, “place of reeds,” referring to the tule or junco, a marsh reed that grows by lakes and rivers. Tula, in the modern state of Hidalgo, was the capital of the Toltec civilization, famous for the Atlantes — giant stone warrior columns.

Don’t confuse the Toltecs of Tula with the earlier city of Teotihuacan or with the later Mexica (Aztecs), who admired the Toltecs and claimed descent from them.
