Toniná

Toniná, near Ocosingo in Chiapas, was a warlike Maya city whose Acropolis climbs a hillside in seven terraced platforms to a height of about 74 meters, making it one of the tallest pyramidal structures in Mesoamerica, taller even than Teotihuacán’s Pyramid of the Sun.

Toniná was a fierce rival of nearby Palenque and even captured one of its rulers. It also bears one of the last Long Count dates ever carved, from AD 909.
