Tonatiuh

Tonatiuh was the Mexica god of the sun, and the face traditionally identified at the center of the famous Sun Stone (often called the Aztec calendar) is usually said to be his. The Mexica believed the sun had to be nourished with offerings and sacrifices so it could continue its daily journey across the sky.

Don’t confuse him with Huitzilopochtli, the patron god of the Mexica: Huitzilopochtli also had solar associations, but he is remembered above all as the god of war.
