Pueblo chontal de Tabasco

The Chontales of Tabasco, who call themselves Yokot’anob, are a Maya people who live mainly in the central part of the state and speak Yokot’an, a Mayan language.

Do not confuse them with the Chontales of Oaxaca, a different Indigenous people whose language is unrelated; the Spanish applied the Nahuatl word “chontalli”, meaning “foreigner”, to both groups.
