Pirámide de los Nichos

The Pyramid of the Niches is the most famous building of El Tajín, an ancient city in northern Veracruz that flourished after the fall of Teotihuacan and is linked to the Totonac culture. The pyramid takes its name from the 365 niches carved into its stepped sides, one for each day of the year, and El Tajín was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

The site lies near Papantla, the town famous for its voladores, the ritual flyers who descend from a tall pole, and for its vanilla.
