Palacio Nacional (México)

Axayácatl was the sixth Mexica tlatoani (ruler) and the father of Moctezuma II. His palace in Tenochtitlan, known as the ‘Casas Viejas,’ stood on the site now occupied by the Nacional Monte de Piedad, facing the Zócalo, and it was there that Moctezuma lodged Hernán Cortés and his men in 1519.

The name distinguished it from Moctezuma II’s own newer palace, the ‘Casas Nuevas,’ which stood where the National Palace is today.
