Numeración maya

The Maya were one of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica, flourishing in what is now southeastern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. They are credited with discovering the concept of zero, which they wrote as a shell-shaped glyph and used in their base-20 number system and in the Long Count calendar.

This achievement came centuries before the zero of Indian and Arabic mathematics reached Europe. The Maya are also remembered for their hieroglyphic writing, their astronomy and cities such as Chichén Itzá and Palenque.
