México-Tenochtitlan

México-Tenochtitlán, founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco, was the capital and largest city of the Mexica (Aztec) Empire, with grand causeways, canals and the Templo Mayor at its center. It fell to Hernán Cortés and his indigenous allies in 1521, and Mexico City was built on its ruins.

Don’t confuse it with Teotihuacán, a much older city that had been abandoned centuries before the Mexica arrived in the valley.
