La Venta

La Venta was a major ceremonial center of the Olmec civilization, located in what is now the state of Tabasco. Its Great Pyramid, a massive mound built of earth and clay around 900 to 400 BCE, is considered the first pyramid of Mesoamerica.

Later cultures took the idea much further: the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan and El Castillo at Chichén Itzá are far more famous, but they came many centuries after La Venta.
