Huitzilopochtli

Huitzilopochtli, whose name means “hummingbird of the left (south)”, was the Mexica god of war and of the sun, and the patron deity of the Mexica people. According to legend, he guided their migration until they saw an eagle perched on a cactus — the sign to found Tenochtitlan, and the image that now appears on the Mexican flag.

One of the two shrines atop the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan was dedicated to him; the other belonged to Tlaloc, the rain god, with whom he is sometimes confused.
