Cultura zapoteca
The Zapotecs built one of Mesoamerica’s oldest civilizations in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, developing one of the region’s earliest writing systems and founding the mountaintop capital of Monte Albán.
The Zapotec people and language remain very much alive in Oaxaca today, and Mexico’s revered president Benito Juárez was a Zapotec from the Oaxacan highlands.
