Calakmul

Calakmul was one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Maya world, a rival of Tikal, and its ruins lie deep in the jungle of southern Campeche, near the Guatemalan border. The site sits inside the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don’t confuse it with other famous Maya sites in neighboring states: Chichén Itzá and Uxmal are in Yucatán, Tulum is in Quintana Roo, and Palenque is in Chiapas.
