Silver mining was the economic engine of the viceroyalty: cities such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and Taxco were born and prospered around their mines. The Crown took a share of everything extracted (the royal fifth), and New Spain’s silver circulated through Europe and Asia via trade, including the Manila Galleon.
