Palacio de Minería

The College of Mining (Colegio de Minería, originally the Real Seminario de Minería) trained New Spain’s mining engineers and pioneered modern scientific teaching in Mexico, covering fields such as chemistry, physics and mineralogy. It is regarded as an early cradle of engineering education in the Americas.

Its landmark building, the Palacio de Minería in Mexico City’s historic center, was designed by Manuel Tolsá and completed in 1813; today it belongs to UNAM and hosts a famous annual book fair.
