Nueva Vizcaya (Nueva España)

Nueva Vizcaya was founded around 1562 by the explorer Francisco de Ibarra, who named it after his homeland, Biscay, in Spain. Its capital was Durango, and it mainly covered today’s Durango and Chihuahua, along with parts of Sinaloa and Sonora. Its mineral wealth drove the colonization of New Spain’s north.
