Hacienda

Haciendas were large agricultural and ranching estates, and peones worked on them for wages, often paid in kind or through the company store (tienda de raya). Because they routinely fell into debt to the landowner, they were bound to the land; this system of debt peonage survived into the Porfiriato and became one of the causes of the Revolution.
