Encomiendas en Nueva España

The encomienda granted a Spanish colonist the right to the labor and tribute of a group of indigenous people, in exchange for the obligation to instruct them in Christianity. A visitador was a royal inspector sent from Spain to audit the conduct of colonial authorities. Both were key institutions of the colonial period, when Mexico was the Viceroyalty of New Spain (1521–1821).
