Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco

The Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Santiago Tlatelolco was founded by the Franciscans in 1536, with the support of Bishop Juan de Zumárraga and Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, to educate the sons of Indigenous nobles in Latin, rhetoric, and philosophy. Fray Bernardino de Sahagún worked there with Indigenous scholars on the Florentine Codex, a monumental record of Nahua culture.

Don’t confuse it with the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico (1551), the first university in New Spain, which was not intended for Indigenous students.
