Son jarocho

Son jarocho is the traditional string music of southern Veracruz, played on the jarana jarocha, the requinto and the harp, with dancers stamping out rhythms (zapateado) on a wooden platform called a tarima. Its most famous song is “La Bamba,” and the music comes alive at community celebrations called fandangos.

Don’t confuse it with son huasteco (huapango), the violin-and-falsetto tradition of the Huasteca region, or with mariachi, which comes from western Mexico.
