“The City of Palaces” is a nickname Mexico City earned for the grand civil and religious buildings of its historic center, such as the National Palace, the Palacio de Minería and the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The phrase is traditionally linked to 19th-century European travelers who were dazzled by the capital’s architecture. The Zócalo, officially the Plaza de la Constitución, is the heart of that historic center and one of the largest public squares in the world.
