Bernardo de Balbuena

Bernardo de Balbuena (c. 1562–1627) was a Spanish-born poet who grew up in New Spain and later became a bishop in the Caribbean. His long poem Grandeza mexicana (1604) is a lavish praise of Mexico City — its streets, trade, gardens, and people — and a foundational work of colonial Mexican literature.

Don’t confuse it with Primero sueño, the famous baroque poem by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz written later in the same century.
