Independencia de México

On the night of September 15–16, 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in Dolores, Guanajuato, and called the people to rise up against Spanish rule — the “Grito de Dolores” that began the War of Independence. That is why September 16 is celebrated as Mexico’s Independence Day.

Watch out for a classic trick: independence was actually consummated eleven years later, on September 27, 1821, when the Trigarante Army entered Mexico City. Also do not confuse it with November 20 (start of the Revolution) or May 5 (Battle of Puebla).
