Dolores Hidalgo

The independence movement began in the state of Guanajuato: in the town of Dolores (today Dolores Hidalgo), the priest Miguel Hidalgo issued the Grito de Dolores on September 16, 1810, calling the people to arms. Days later the insurgents took the Alhóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato City, their first major victory. The conspiracy that set everything in motion was plotted in neighboring Querétaro, but it is Guanajuato that bears the title of cradle of independence.
