Constitución española de 1812

The Constitution of Cádiz, enacted in Spain in 1812 while the country resisted Napoleon’s occupation, also applied to New Spain and introduced liberal measures such as freedom of the press. That freedom allowed new newspapers to circulate, and this card’s source credits José Isidoro Morales as the creator of one of them.

The period produced celebrated writers and journalists in Mexico, such as José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, who founded the paper El Pensador Mexicano in 1812.
