Plan de Ayutla

The Plan of Ayutla was proclaimed in 1854 in the town of Ayutla, Guerrero, and was backed by liberals such as Juan Álvarez and Ignacio Comonfort. It called for removing Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had returned to power as a dictator styling himself “His Serene Highness.”

Its triumph in 1855 brought a new generation of liberals to power and opened the era of the Reform, leading to the Constitution of 1857. Don’t confuse it with the Plan of Iguala, the 1821 plan that achieved independence.
